Effective Interdiction Approaches to Stem the Flow of Drugs and Contraband in Legal Mail and Privileged Communications

This workshop covers the best practices, processes, and pitfalls of screening legal mail and privileged communications. The increasing digitization and copying of an inmate’s personal mail has led to a significant increase in contraband and drugs sent in fraudulent legal mail, or privileged court documents, and poses unique screening challenges. Also discussed are new approaches being employed by leading DOCs to policy development, staff training, and emerging technologies to screen for threats ranging from powders to liquids, and electronics to drug-laced papers, all without opening the mail.
